The international experts discussed and assessed each of the 4,928 entries from fifty-six countries. But only the designs that won over the jury with their quality and innovative power were given an award. Tramino Braunschweig succeeded in convincing the jury members, deservedly winning the sought-after Red Dot seal of quality.

Throughout the world and across different industries, Red Dot is seen as the award for high design quality. The international Red Dot jury bestows the sought-after seal of quality only to those products that stand out clearly from comparable entries thanks to their excellent design.

The internationally respected product competition will culminate in the Red Dot Gala in Essen on 29 June 2015. The glamorous award ceremony with more than 1,200 guests will be hosted by Professor Dr Peter Zec in Essen’s Aalto-Theater. The winning products are then presented for four weeks in the special exhibition “Design on Stage” before being included in the museum’s permanent exhibition. Tramino Braunschweig will be presented on five boards.

“The tram design was developed in a long term process of coordination between operator and producer. Especially for this tram there were established integrated design solutions which connect operating requirements on modern public transport systems with high-performing technical solutions to a convincing overall concept. The result is a streetcar which gains more attractiveness for public transport as well for passengers as for the operator. Conceptual purity based on high level functionality and an emotional character was one of the major goals for the design works. The transportation service at all should reach a more valuable quality to get the most acceptance for the new tram and finally to convince more passengers of this setup. A significant overall design style, a good balanced interior space and a properly color & trim concept create a high level potential of identification of the Braunschweig passengers for their new Tramino,” says Jens Timmich of Berlin-based studioFT, co-designer of the new Urbino.

The Solaris Tramino for Braunschweiger Verkehrs-GmbH are uni-directional low-floor vehicles, consisting of four body sections at an overall length of 35.7 metres. They are 2.3 metres wide. Each vehicle section has its own bogie for Braunschweig’s track gauge of 1,100 mm. They are the second batch of trams from Solaris’s GTx family.

Each air-conditioned tram for Braunschweig has a capacity of 211 passengers, including 87 seated. There are six sets of double doors, each 1,300 mm wide. One of them is located right behind the driver’s cab, where there is also the wheelchair space. The space for prams is located by the fourth and sixth doors. Every section rests on one centrally-mounted bogie. Consequently, the weight of the tram is evenly distributed. The vehicle is more stable and the forces transmitted through the articulations are much smaller.

The Tramino is equipped with five 90 kW asynchronous traction motors and supercapacitors, where recuperated energy is stored. The tram is also fitted with a system that stabilises its body against lateral movement. The city operator, Braunschweiger Verkehrs-GmbH, has ordered eighteen modern trams from the Polish manufacturer.
