th March, Solaris and Leipzig City Transport (LVB) signed a framework agreement for the delivery of up to 41 Tramino.
The contract signed on 26th March stipulates that Solaris will manufacture up to 41 trams in the years from 2016 until 2020. Five units are firmly ordered. The remaining 36 vehicles may be purchased in up to four tranches, each to consist of at least five and not more than sixteen trams.
“The fact that we won this prestigious tender for the delivery of trams to Leipzig is a sign of a great success for our company. This seems even greater considering we have competed with global railway technology firms to obtain this order. Most importantly not only the price was a deciding factor in the tender, but also innovative technical developments we offered in our Tramino for Leipzig. The good credentials our trams have on the rolling stock market are certainly not without significance, either,” emphasizes Solange Olszewska, CEO of Solaris Bus & Coach S.A.
Deliveries of Solaris trams to Leipzig will start in 2016. The Tramino will be fully adjusted to the city’s unique track gauge of 1458 mm. The vehicles will be 2.3 metres wide and around 45 metres long. The step-free interior will be at least 65% low-floor. Over 200 passengers will be able to travel on the vehicle, including disabled people for whom a specially adapted space was designed.
“By winning this tender, Solaris has once again confirmed its high technical competence in the rolling stock field as well as the quality of its products. It is worth mentioning that still we are the only Polish company that is able to meet restrictive German requirements for rolling stock and to successfully certify the vehicles delivered. So far, no other Polish producer has succeeded this,” said Zbigniew Palenica, Member of the Board of Solaris Bus & Coach responsible for the development of the rolling stock division.
“As Leipzig is constantly growing, public transport is becoming an increasingly significant matter. Continuous investment in attractive and comfortable city transport is the only chance to fulfill the requirements of such a dynamic and important European trade center as Leipzig. With the new purchase for trams we are taking another big step in this area,” says Uwe Albrecht, Mayor of the city of Leipzig responsible for the economy.
“We are confident that the trams we have purchase will meet the highest quality standards. We are glad that with the delivery of these modern vehicles we will improve the comfort of journey around Leipzig. From the day of signing of the contract we will start our cooperation to successfully complete the deliveries. I need to emphasize how important our partner, the Free State of Saxony, is for the project by financially supporting 50% of the purchase,” states Ulf Middelberg, Member of the Board of Leipzig City Transport.
Solaris is a leading European producer of public transport vehicles and presented its first tram in 2009. Since then, the company has completed deliveries of trams to Poznań, Poland and Jena, Germany. Orders for Braunschweig, Germany and Olsztyn, Poland are currently being delivered and produced.
