On 17 June 2015, the Solaris battery bus Urbino 12 electric for Dresden City Transport (DVB) was officially presented. After the ceremony, the vehicle fitted with the pantograph charging system, went on its first passenger-carrying journey. With the purchase of a first Solaris electric vehicle, DVB begins the investment into emission-free battery buses.
Representatives of the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure were present at the presentation of the Solaris electric bus. After a demonstration of the pantograph charging system the Urbino 12 electric began to prove its benefits in service with passengers on board.
The battery bus for DVB is fitted with an electric axle ZF AVE 130 and 200 kWh batteries, allowing non-stop operation on the planned route. A daily mileage of 300 kilometres will be achieved. The vehicle will run on line 79 which connects the districts Mickten and Übigau. The batteries will be topped up via roof-mounted pantograph at the terminus, which will take only a few minutes. A plug connection will be used for overnight charging in the depot.
The battery charging system is integrated with the bus stop infrastructure. For the first time in Germany, a charging station is fed from a tram traction power supply, making it possible to use energy recuperated by trams during braking to charge the bus. This will significantly lower bus operating costs.
The purchase of Urbino 12 electric is a part of the “Electric Bus Line 79” project run within the “Electric mobility connects” programme of the Federal States of Bavaria and Saxony. “Electric Bus Line 79” is one of forty projects in the programme. It received €1.1 million in funding from the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure.
Dresden is yet another German city that has chosen innovative Solaris Urbino electric. So far, Solaris battery buses have already been running in Braunschweig, Düsseldorf and Hamburg. Soon similar vehicles will boost operator’s fleets in Berlin and Oberhausen.
