Solaris Tramino Leipzig with a TRAKO 2017 Malinowski award
Back to press releases

The Solaris Tramino Leipzig tram has been awarded a prestigious engineer Ernest Malinowski Award at the TRAKO International Railway Industry trade show in Gdańsk. The vehicle will be displayed at the fair premises until 29th September.

The Solaris Tramino Leipzig is 37,63 meter long and it consists of four modules. The tram presented at the Gdańsk’s trade show is one of the 23 that the Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe (LVB) has ordered from Solaris since 2015. The frame agreement signed includes the delivery of up to 41 trams of this kind until 2020.

– The statue we have received is a reward for everyone who was involved in the Tramino Leipzig project. This includes Solaris employees, as well as the LVB operator in Leipzig, who has been involved from the very start of the project in all the engineering and design works accompanying the development of a tram for Leipzig – said Zbigniew Palenica, Deputy CEO of Solaris Bus & Coach and a CEO of Solaris Tram.

The stylistic concept is the result of a close-knit collaboration between the customer and the design studio IFS Design, right from the first stages of the implementation of this order. A detailed analysis of the distribution of various elements allowed to optimise the tram in terms of comfort and ergonomics, but also in terms of the habits and wishes of the tram drivers in Leipzig. It is the needs of the drivers that led to the creation of a special mock-up of the driver’s work station, representing the suggested solutions in minute detail. The employees of LVB had thus the opportunity to test them and to provide feedback. This enabled the manufacturer to work out the best possible design which was then turned into a product.

It is the third German contract carried out by Solaris so far. The Traminos were delivered earlier to Jena (5 ones) and Braunschweig (18 vehicles). The second of the two cities has recently placed an order for another 7 trams.

The thorough design allowed the creators to make room for 75 seats and 220 passengers, while keeping a wide passage throughout the whole vehicle. The 2.3-meter wide tram is equipped with 4 classic driving bogies and one non-powered Jacobs type bogie. The tram track width amounts to 1458 mm, specific for the LVB network. In order to ensure maximum aesthetic cohesion and a minimum noise of the devices installed on the vehicle, the tram has been equipped with a roof shield.

In the contest named in honor of engineer Ernest Malinowski technical innovations in rail vehicles were evaluated. The winners of the award are presented with a statue which is a replica of a monument representing engineer Ernest Malinowski.
