In the tender worth over €27 million, emphasis was put on innovative technology aimed at improving the buses’ energy balance. Each Urbino for Warsaw will be fitted with photovoltaic panels mounted on the roof. The solar batteries are to support electric equipment when the engine is running as well as during layovers at termini. This concept will lower the fuel consumption of the bus. This is all the more relevant in face of the growing demand for energy from auxiliaries such as air conditioning as well as extensive passenger information and CCTV monitoring systems.
In the newly ordered Urbino for the capital city, the power will be supplied by the DAF/PACCAR MX-11 Euro 6 engine connected to the Voith DIWA 6 gear box. Warsaw passengers are familiar with Solaris buses and will find air conditioning, LCD monitors and eco-friendly LED lighting in the new units. Additional space for buggies and wheelchairs is a standard for the interior. To provide safety onboard, the buses will be equipped with five monitoring cameras inside and five devices outside the vehicle. As in the previous Urbino for MZA, there will be an alcolock, a device that prevents the bus from being started if the driver has alcohol on their breath.
Solaris buses have become an integral part of Warsaw’s urban landscape. So far, there are over thousand vehicles of this brand in the city. They will soon include ten electric buses, thanks to a contract signed at the end of 2014 between Solaris and MZA.
