On 5th of December, Solaris and üstra Hannover City Transport have signed a contract for delivery of three electric buses Urbino 12. They will be equipped with a fast charging system using a roof-mounted pantograph. It is the first order for Solaris electric buses based on the new version of the Urbino city bus that had its world premiere at this year’s IAA exhibition, which coincidentally took place in Hannover.
Exquisitely modern and clean, the buses will arrive in Hannover at the end of 2015. The new 12-metre Urbino electric for üstra is fitted with the ZF AVE 130 electric drive with axle-mounted motors. This concept frees up space for passengers and significantly reduces the weight of the vehicle. Additional weight savings result from the underlying design of the new Urbino, which is several hundred kilograms lighter than its predecessor. The batteries, mounted in the back of the electric buses, will deliver 120 kWh.
The innovative character of the bus is that the charging system allows non-stop operation on the planned routes without returning to the depot. The batteries can be topped up through a charger which supplies 450 kW via Schunk pantographs mounted on the roof. A single charge will take only four to six minutes and will be enough for bus to run until it reaches the next charging point. There is also a traditional 32 kW overnight charging device, which uses a plug connection installed in the bus. The Solaris electric buses will operate on routes 100 and 200, which connect the sights of the capital of Lower Saxony.
üstra has long been a provider of green and sustainable public transport, supported by Solaris as bus supplier. Hannover’s municipal operator already runs 29 Solaris hybrid buses and holds options for a further 24 units. Furthermore, the city’s fleet includes 52 diesel-powered Solaris Urbino 12.
Versions of the Urbino electric have been present in Germany since March this year. So far this eco-friendly Solaris bus has been purchased by Braunschweig, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Hamburg and Oberhausen.
