Solaris electric bus tested at Hamburg Airport

Solaris electric bus tested at Hamburg Airport

Solaris Urbino electric trialled at Hamburg Airport. Experience will benefit the customisation of electric buses to airport operation. Hamburg Airport uses eco-friendly vehicles as part of environmental strategy.

On its demonstration tour of Germany, the Solaris Urbino electric has paid a visit to Hamburg. At the city’s airport, the Solaris battery bus demonstrated that electric mobility can be an option for aviation ground handling such as airside transfers. Solaris will use the experience gained in the trial with Hamburg Airport’s subsidiary Special Transport and Ramp Services (STARS) to tailor its electric buses even more closely to the requirements of airports.

Hamburg Airport places a strong emphasis on eco-friendliness, which is enshrined in the company’s business philosophy. This includes the purchase of vehicles powered by compressed and liquid gas for apron services - the fleet includes six Solaris Urbino 12 CNG, which are used airside and on car park shuttles. By testing the Solaris Urbino electric, STARS evaluated whether battery buses meet Hamburg Airport’s specific operational requirements.

"For us, the conscientious use of energy is very important. In particular, we focus on testing alternative energy sources as experts agree that mobility concepts combining hydrogen, electric and gas vehicles bring together sustainable drive technologies and protect the environment" said Michael Eggenschwiler, CEO of Hamburg Airport.

Jens Ludwigkeit, Managing Director of Solaris Deutschland GmbH, presented the bus in Hamburg and attended to the demonstration: "With the Solaris Urbino electric, Hamburg Airport tests state-of-the-art technology for forward-looking electric mobility. We will be delighted to use the experience gained by Hamburg Airport and STARS in the further development of our climate-friendly buses."

The Solaris Urbino electric was unveiled in 2011. Its drive technology is supplied by German specialist Vossloh Kiepe. The 8.9-metre midibus version shown in Hamburg is powered by a 120 kW electric motor and uses batteries with a capacity of 121 kWh. A new air-conditioning unit with integrated CO2 heat pump ensures a pleasant atmosphere on board along with low levels of energy consumption. Solaris also offers the Urbino electric as a 12-metre standard bus, while an articulated version is under development.
