Record contract for 150 Solaris buses for Vilnius underway
Back to press releases

Representatives of Solaris Bus & Coach S.A. have signed a contract with the Vilnius bus operator UAB „Vilniaus viešasis transportas“ for a delivery of 150 new generation Urbino buses. 100 of the ordered vehicles are 12-metre buses, the other 50 ones are articulated buses. It is the biggest contract for the one-off delivery of buses in Lithuania since 1990.

The order for the Lithuanian capital covers the supply and financing of 100 new Solaris Urbino 12 and 50 new generation Urbino 18 buses, worth in total over EUR 40 million. In line with the terms of the signed deal the first buses will make it onto the roads of Vilnius in March 2018, whereas the rest of the order is to be delivered by the end of next year. Financing will be ensured by local bank Luminor.

“We are proud of our contribution to the modernisation of the bus fleet in Vilnius. The first Solaris Trollinos arrived here in 2004, and eight years later the city welcomed environmental-friendly gas-fuelled buses; soon we will deliver 150 Urbino buses of the latest generation to Vilnius residents. This recent order opens a whole new chapter in relations between Solaris and the biggest bus operator in Lithuania,” says Zbigniew Palenica, Vice-CEO of Solaris in charge of Sales and After Sales.

The vehicles for VVT will be equipped with engines meeting the highly restrictive Euro 6 emissions standards. The one hundred 12-metre buses will feature a Cummins engine, whereas DAF motors will be used in the articulated buses. In order to help drivers improve on their economical driving, every vehicle will be equipped with an Economiser - a system for the registration of fuel consumption and the driving style.

Apart from the standard equipment the buses will also feature a row of other enhancements for the benefit of the driver and the passengers: a passenger counting system, full air conditioning and free access to WiFi. Passengers using public transport will be also able to recharge their mobile phones using one of the generally accessible USB ports. A CCTV system will be installed both inside of the bus and outside of the bus, as will a state-of-the-art passenger information system. For even greater travel safety, an alcolock will be installed right next to the dashboard. This breathalyser prevents drunk drivers from starting the engine.

It is the first order in the history of the city for Solaris vehicles with conventional drives. So far Vilnius residents have been able to ride on the 15-metre trolleybuses Trollino and on CNG-fuelled Urbino 12 buses. Thanks to the record contract signed today with the Vilnius public transport operator, the number of buses with the green dachshund logo in Lithuania will hike to nearly 350. What is more, Solaris is the sole bidder in a tender, that is currently underway, for the supply of 41 trolleybuses to Vilnius.
