Cracow City Transport (MPK) has started testing the Solaris Urbino 12 electric. The test run is scheduled to last twelve months and will help to evaluate the bus’s feasibility and efficiency. If the result is satisfactory, the operator will purchase more electric buses to serve the city’s inhabitants.

Cracow City Transport to evaluate the bus’s feasibility and efficiency. If the result is satisfactory, the operator will purchase more electric buses to serve the city’s inhabitants.

The Solaris Urbino 12 electric will be leased by the operator for twelve months. The 100% electric and zero emission bus is fitted with a 210 kWh battery which is charged overnight at the depot. It uses a 100 kW battery charger, also provided by Solaris. Electric drive motors are mounted in the wheel hubs. It brings down overall weight even further and at the same time increases the space inside the bus.

"Investing in sustainable transport and urban systems seems inevitable nowadays. Cracow keeps pace with this general trend and is actively involved in freeing the city from traffic congestion. Furthermore, airborne by-products from exhaust systems are a major factor in the creation of smog in the city. We still do not give this subject enough attention", comments Julian Pilszczek, CEO of .

The Solaris Urbino 12 electric will be tested on route 154 which runs from the Main Railway Station to Prądnik Biały, the most northerly district in the city. Standard tickets will be accepted on board. The bus will provide a full day's operation from one overnight charge.

Until now, Solaris has sold its electric buses to Klagenfurt (Austria), Braunschweig, Düsseldorf and Hamburg (Germany) and to Västerås (Sweden).
