Braunschweig exercises Solaris Tramino option

Braunschweig exercises Solaris Tramino option
Back to press releases

In May 2013 Solaris signed a contract for the delivery of another three Tramino to Braunschweiger Verkehrs-AG. The operator exercised an option for additional vehicles included in the first order from May 2012. Last year, Braunschweiger Verkehrs-AG ordered 15 Solaris Tramino. The additional trams will be delivered by May 2015.

The contract signed with Braunschweiger Verkehrs-AG in May 2012 was for the delivery of fifteen Solaris Tramino low floor trams. Additionally, the German operator held an option for another three Tramino, which was exercised this month. As a result, the total ordered by Braunschweiger Verkehrs-AG now amounts to 18 trams.

All the Solaris Tramino for Braunschweiger Verkehrs-AG will be uni-directional low-floor vehicles, consisting of four body sections at an overall length of just under 36 metres. Each vehicle section will have its own bogie for Braunschweig’s track gauge of 1,100 mm. Inside the Tramino, 201 passengers will be carried, 77 of them seated. Access is provided by six double-leaf doors.

Similarly to their previously ordered counterparts, the additional three trams will also be equipped with supercapacitators, where energy is stored. This solution allows to optimise the trams’ energy balance.

The first fifteen Solaris Tramino for Braunschweiger Verkehrs-AG will be delivered between May and December 2014, while the three recently ordered will reach Braunschweig by the end of May 2015. The purchase of three additional trams was made possible thanks to subsidy by the Lower Saxony transport authorities.

Solaris CEO Solange Olszewska is delighted with this second order: "We are glad that Braunschweiger Verkehrs-AG once again ordered our trams. In choosing the Solaris Tramino, the operator will not only benefit from state-of-the-art technology in new trams. The trams’ attractive design will enhance the cityscape and we are sure that passengers in Braunschweig will love the excellent comfort of the Tramino."

"Thanks to the order for another three trams, the percentage of low-floor vehicles in our fleet will amount to 85. It will enhance the comfort of travelling and the quality of our services. We are convinced that the money we invest in our fleet’s renewal are well spent", says Georg Hohmann, CEO of Braunschweiger Verkehrs-AG.

Dirk Fischer, Tram Operations Manager of Braunschweiger Verkehrs-AG adds: "The last twelve months of successful cooperation with Solaris convinced us that taking advantage of the option for three additional trams is the right choice. I am sure that our cooperation will remain as effective as it has been so far and Solaris trams will start operating in the middle of 2014."

The Solaris Tramino family was first presented in 2009. Today, 45 trams are in service in the Polish city of Poznań. The vehicle concept chosen by Braunschweiger Verkehrs-AG, in which each body section rests on its own bogie, will also be used in five Tramino for German operator Jenaer Nahverkehr GmbH, which are set to be delivered in 2013. They will be the first Polish trams on the German market.
